In commemoration of International Week 1998, the Associated Student Federation (ASF) Forum and the International Student Organization (ISO) will sponsor a Latino/Chicano Art Exhibit on Monday, March 23.

According to a current agenda, several community artists will be featured in the event; included are the works of Kathy Gallegos of Eagle Rock, Vulfrano Gutierrez of Pomona, Santiago "Santi" Zepeda of Montebello, Margaret Garcia of Los Angeles and Manuel Cuenca from Eagle Rock.

"I decided to show my work because I had the opportunity. The opportunity was presented to me by one of the La Verne students," said Zepeda, 19, a Vail High School student. "I took the chance."

According to Zepeda, he has been involved in art since he was younger, when he "spent a lot of time alone and started drawing."

"The solitude is what inspired me, but I think I have always had it [artistic ability] in me," he said.

Zepeda has contributed 10 of his own different works for the exhibit, and anticipates reaction on his work from guests and the public. His creations capture a personal impression of culture, primarily, expressing the manner in which he views politics and revolutionaries.

Zepeda said, "Art is a time for an artist to recognize himself. All I want to do is let the public see what I try to express in my work.

"The public is your judge. From there you know if you work [as a successful artist] or not."

The art presentation is scheduled to take place in the West Dining Room, and will be in session from 1-6p.m.

In addition to a variety of artistic and cultural expression, pan dulce (sweet bread) and refreshments will be available for guests throughout the event.

In this manner, guests will have the opportunity to both witness and savor some of the traditions of the Latino/Chicano culture.
