With Owen Wright, the current head baseball coach, retiring after the final out in the 1998 season, the University of La Verne has filled the void by hiring Robert E. Lee as the new head coach.

Lee, who has been an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific University since 1994, will begin his duties as head coach officially Sept. 1.

Aside from his on the field responsibilities, Lee will teach classes in the Movement and Sport Science Department and will advise students.

"When we are looking for someone to fill a position, we are looking for a person who can be a part of two departments: the Movement and Sport Science Department and the Athletic Department," Jim Paschal, athletic director, said. "Bobby Lee fit what we were asking for, I think, best of anybody we were talking to.

"He is enthusiastic about being the head coach, and I'm looking forward to him sharing that enthusiasm with us on campus in September."

Lee graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1994 with a bachelor's in physical education. He later earned his master of education degree with an emphasis in physical education from APU.

"He fits us [ULV] very well, and I think we fit him very well also," Paschal said.

"There is so much tradition," Lee said. "I hope I can continue that great tradition and meet expectations."

"Of all the people I've met at La Verne, the friendly atmosphere [both on campus and in the Athletic Department] seems like a very good environment to work in."

Wright has coached for 36 years, 21 at Elizabethtown, Penn. He has compiled an overall record of 601-437-2, including 10 league championships, two third place teams and the 1995 NCAA Division III National Championship. After his championship season, Wright was named Coach of the Year. He has been selected as the regional Coach of the Year three times.
