California Theta, the University of La Verne Alpha Chi chapter, hosted
the Alpha Chi Honor Society Conference for region VII March 20-21. Many
ULV students presented projects and participated in the conference.
Alpha Chi is a national honor society in which more than 300 universities
and colleges in the United States have membership. Members of Alpha Chi
consists of juniors and seniors in the top 10 percent of their classes.
The conference included Alpha Chi members of universities and colleges
in the western states, Region VII. Dr. Kathleen Lamkin, professor of music
and Region VII president 1997-98 organized the event with Dr. Al Clark,
assistant vice president of academic affairs and Alpha Chi local chapter
sponsor.
The highlights of the events were the student presentations. Several
ULV students presented as well as other students from other universities.
Senior Michael Medford, treasurer of California Theta, presented an autobiographical
monologue entitled "The Rock." It was about his study abroad trip
to Oxford. Marcia Boyd president of California Theta presented "Pass
It On" and senior Jennifer Reh presented a video project entitled "Gladstone
Street School: The Power of the Dream."
"We received many compliments from the visitors from other colleges.
We were told that we were very polished presenters and that the student
presentations were very interesting and the highlight of the convention,"
said Medford, a senior double majoring in economics and accounting.
Deanna Brush presented a dance and showed how to work with young students
dancing. Ryan Harrison sang and played the piano from a composition he wrote
himself entitled "(I Just Can't) Feel The Beat." Also Mohammed
Ghonim presented a chemistry paper, "Synthesis of Nucleosides Derivations
and Nucleoside Analog for the Study of DNA Oxidation."
"I was very pleased with our student presentations. I thought ULV
really had some excellent academic presentations and there was a lot of
variety. It's good for us academically to be known to all these other colleges
and universities, I think they were impressed," said Dr. Lamkin.
Ghonim was also elected as the student representative for Region VII.
Ghonim has the honor of being one of seven students in the nation to be
a member of the national council. He will attend the national council meeting
on April 17-18 in New Orleans and attend the national convention next spring
representing Region VII.
"His presentation was very well done and everyone was really impressed.
I think that is one of the reason he was elected for this student delegate
position, I think I was just pleased to see the outstanding students of
ULV put in a professional situation such as this and the fact that they
did so very well," said Dr. Lamkin.
After the student presentations a business meeting was held to elect
new officers for region VII. Dr. Clark was elected as the new 1998-99 president
for the region.
"I was very surprised to be elected and pleased at the same time
that ULV could have two presidents in a row. I'm looking forward to participating
in the national conference next year," said Dr. Clark
"With ULV represented so strongly at the regional level, this chapter
of Alpha Chi should grow in the number of exceptional students it admits
for membership, which in turn will increase the prestige of Alpha Chi on
this campus," added Medford.
