University of La Verne alumnus and former Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Dan Quisenberry died Wednesday. He was 45.

The Royals confirmed Wednesday morning that Quisenberry had died from complications of a brain tumor.

After attending Orange Coast College for two years, the 1975 ULV graduate came to ULV and developed his moving fastball.

Quisenberry was not drafted out of college but, as Quisenberry believed, was signed by the Royals because former La Verne baseball coach Ben Hines recommended the club sign the right-handed, submarine-style hurler.

He pitched 12 years in Major League Baseball and was 13th all-time in career saves with 244.

Quisenberry led the American League in saves five times. In 1985, the three-time All-Star was the winning pitcher of the sixth game of the World Series, when the Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1.

Quisenberry is survived by his wife, Janie, whom he met during his career at La Verne, and his two children, Alysia and David.
