The young and inexperienced University of La Verne women's soccer team
took to the field last Saturday against long-time Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival Cal Lutheran, in a battle that the Regals
won by a single goal, 1-0.
"We had our opportunities especially in the first half and then
we had a couple good opportunities at the end of the second half,"
said head coach Wendy Zwissler.
The Leopards had a golden opportunity to score, but their possible goal
was called back by the referees with five minutes ticking from the first-half
clock.
The Regals' lone goal came when sophomore Alia Khan scored her fourth
goal of the season, five minutes after La Verne's goal was called back.
Although ULV had eight shots on goal while Cal Lutheran had 13, the
lack of offensive production can be attributed to the Leopards' inability
to move the ball into scoring range.
"We go from the goalie to the fullbacks, from the fullbacks to
the halfbacks, but then we didn't do a good job of making the runs in the
front [with the forwards] to see the spaces [to pass to]," said Zwissler.
"That's the next link we are trying to get in more experience in practice."
In their most recent game, Tuesday, ULV defeated SCIAC opponent Pomona-Pitzer
at home by a score of 3-1.
The win evens the Leopards' overall record at 4-4 and their SCIAC standing
to 2-2. They play at Occidental tomorrow at 11 a.m.
