of three games, is assisted by junior setter Michelle Louie and sophomore
Amy Brummel. La Verne lost in three straight games to Colorado College on
Saturday.
Times have been hard for the University of La Verne women's volleyball
team in recent matches.
But for the Leopards Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) play has come at a good time, as ULV defeated Occidental in four
games, 15-7, 17-15, 10-15 and 15-7, Wednesday.
Junior Sarah Henry (13 kills) and senior Lynsey Best (12 kills) led
the way for La Verne, which improved to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC. The
victory also allowed ULV to snap its three-game losing streak.
The road win over Occidental was a much better showing than the Leopards
had last Friday and Saturday, when ULV's struggles were on display, losing
to Chapman and Colorado College, respectively.
"We get out fine, and we have won first games," said head
coach Don Flora, whose team fell to the Chapman Panthers in three games,
15-6, 15-11 and 15-8. "But then, we just drop off from there."
Wednesday night also proved to be a rough time for La Verne, as the
Leopards were swept in three games, 15-2, 15-7, 15-6, by UC San Diego.
Junior Allison Moore was the only La Verne player with double digits
in kills with 10.
After the loss, ULV fell to 4-10, while UCSD improved to 11-2.
The Leopards began Saturday night with a 6-2 lead over the Colorado
College Tigers in the first game. But after a time out, the Tigers earned
a side out and scored eight unanswered points to lead 10-6.
After a side out and with Best serving, Henry picked up a point with
a kill, cutting the Tigers' lead to 10-7.
The teams exchanged serves and points, until Colorado built a 14-8 advantage.
However, Henry again picked up a kill and got the Leopards a side out.
Junior Michelle Louie served La Verne back into the match at 14-11.
But the Leopards lost a side out, and seconds later, they lost the match
when sophomore Amy Brummel returned a Tigers serve long.
The first game loss to the Tigers seemed to take the wind out of ULV's
sails, as Colorado went on to win the next two games, 15-8 and 15-11, to
complete the three-game sweep.
"Our ball control is lacking," Flora said. "We get in
trouble in serve receive and passing the ball. Defensively, we don't go
to the next level."
Henry finished the contest with seven kills, while freshman Adrianna
Contreras added eight for La Verne.
The Leopards host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tonight at 7:30.
