Youthful runners preparing for conference

Last weekend, the men's and women's cross country teams traveled to
the Biola Invitational Meet to exercise their abilities in preparation of
the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet
on Oct. 17.
A total of 18 schools were competing at the meet held at the La Mirada
Regional Park. Included in the competition were traditionally strong NAIA
teams such as Concordia, Biola, Fresno Pacific and other SCIAC teams such
as Cal Lutheran and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
NCAA schools present, but only competing against each other, were University
of California, Los Angeles, and Pepperdine.
Head coach Pat Widolff was pleased with both teams' performances by
simply saying, "They did good."
Although neither squad placed in the top 10, some runners showed a lot
of promise. To lead the squad in the men's race, sophomore Mario Guerrero
placed in the 62nd spot out of 138 runners with a time of 29:17.6.
"I think it is awesome that we actually have a team this year and
we are pretty young," said Guerrero. "The next couple of years
we should be getting more and more competitive."
Freshman Hermes Iribe had the second best of the team with 30:06.5,
placing 77th. Other individual performances include sophomore Faust Obeso
with 30:55.8 (92nd place) and sophomore Dan Kiminiki with 36:27.9 (134th
place).
Biola University ended up taking the meet (60 points) followed by Glendale
College (63). Fresno Pacific took third with 65 points.
As for the women's meet, junior Maxine Mitchell had the team best with
23:12.7 (72 place) while freshman Quency Long ran a 24:36.7 (96 place).
Others include sophomore Mary Terry with a time of 26:41.7 (109 place),
freshman Trisha Garcia with 27:27.0 (112 place) and freshman Stephanie Adams
with 29:29.0 (119 place).
ULV will travel to Thousand Oaks tomorrow to compete in the Cal Lutheran
Invitational.
