In what has become a bitter rivalry, the University of La Verne and
Occidental College men's soccer teams continued their battle on Ben Hines
Field on Saturday.
The two teams combined for eight yellow cards and one red, as the Leopards
began Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play
with a 2-1 victory.
ULV freshman defender Matt Stone received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike
conduct, while the Tigers' Xhino Hideki got a yellow and a red card for
unsportsman like conduct.
Sophomore middle fielder Mike McClintock scored both goals for the ULV
after Occidental had taken the lead in the 44th minute.
McClintock answered the Tigers' goal one minute later with a scoring
strike in the 45th minute past Occidental keeper Efran Paniagua.
McClintock scored the deciding goal, his second, in the 83rd minute
on an assist from junior middle fielder Ryan Graham.
Freshman Mike Rosen, who made 10 saves, and senior Jon Tunstall teamed
in goal to earn the victory for La Verne. Paniagua saved five shots for
Occidental in his losing effort.
On Wednesday, the Leopards lost to Whittier College, 2-1. It sent their
record to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), Redlands
and Whittier all won their first games in conference. Occidental remained
winless after losing to ULV and stands at 0-5-1 overall.
The Leopards continue in their SCIAC action tomorrow as they host Caltech
