Slowing her step, freshman forward Noelle Hughes positions herself
to pass the ball, while Staci Henders of Whittier College attempts to defend
the play. The Leopards defeated the Poets, 3-2. On Saturday, La Verne scored
eight times at Occidental and defeated the Tigers, 8-0. ULV is 6-4 overall
and 4-2 in SCIAC play.
The inexperienced University of La Verne women's soccer team is getting
better.
Wednesday night the team came out and beat the lady Poets of Whittier
3-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
"We are getting better each time we come out to play," said
head coach Wendy Zwissler, whose team is composed of 12 freshman and sophomores,
and only two upper classmen. "This isn't that bad for as young as we
are."
La Verne's scoring was led by freshman Heather Cooper at the 17:49 mark.
She got an assist from freshman Erica Borbon. La Verne came right back and
scored in the 19th minute on a Borbon shot with an assist from freshman
Heather Cooper. Zwissler was happy with freshman sweeper Nancy Santana's
performance Wednesday.
Whittier got on the scoreboard with a goal from Megan Boisineau in the
23rd minute. Still in the first half, La Verne came back and scored on a
header from junior Deanna Kodana at 28:57 in the first half. The scoring
was closed out by Whittier's Kelly Kaitanjian with 39:00 minutes left in
the game.
"A win is a win," coach Zwissler replied after the game. "We
are young and need to get used to playing with each other and we need to
grow as a team and as players."
ULV travels to Orange tonight and plays Chapman at 7.
