Talents from students at the University of La Verne have no limitations. They range from academics to sports, and from theater to speech. Not only have the students made an impression with their wide range of talent, but faculty and staff have also added their personal talents to make an impression on the University as a whole.

Chair of the Biology Department, Dr. Harvey Good has added to the array of talent at ULV by pursuing his interests in volleyball.

"It was maybe 12 or 13 years ago that Dr. Rick Simon [associate professor of mathematics] got us [other participants] interested in volleyball and showed us how to play," Dr. Good said.

"There is a nucleus of 14-16 people and we play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays."

In 1994, Dr. Good joined with several of the faculty members in volleyball tournament. This team included Owen Wright retired baseball coach, Denny Wheeler, chemistry major alumnus, Dick Hart, Board of Trustees member and a couple of non-ULV related team members. This team competed with other teams in the age bracket of 55-59.

"We won several tournaments within our own age bracket, which included two gold medals and one silver medal," Dr. Good said. "We even qualified to go to San Antonio, Texas, for the finals."

Due to the time commitments the event would require the team did not attend the finals. The finals would run for at least one week to 10 days and Dr. Good said it would be difficult to get that much time off from work.

The team dropped out of the tournament in 1996, due to several injuries and other complications among the team members. Dr. Good said that he still continued to practice at the University with the student and faculty group three days a week.

Dr. Good turned 60 years old this June and became qualified to join the 60-64 year old age bracket. It was at this time that three of the players from the old team called him and told him about the tournaments that would come up in the summer.

The current team has a variety of players which range from a retired boxer to a beach volleyball player. Eight or nine active players make the team.

"Even though we are playing with everybody, we are only competing with people in our own age group," said Dr. Good.

The team played in the Senior Olympics in San Diego on Sept. 13.

They played a round robin in which the group played two younger brackets and one older bracket. The team got the gold medal in their own bracket, and are now qualified to go to the finals in Orlando, Fla., during the summer of 1999. To become qualified to go to the finals, a team must have two gold medals.

Until the finals, the team is looking forward to a series of other tournaments. These include a tournament in November in Long Beach, as well as tournaments in Pasadena during January and February.
