The University of La Verne women's basketball opens its season tonight against Life Bible College at 7:30 in the Supertents. For ULV head coach Julie Kline, this will be her seventh season as the leader of the program.

Kline's philosophical approach to her job is the development of the person, student and the athlete, in that order. Her goal for this season is to improve as the season progresses each practice and each game.

Among the players that are returning this year that will be a major part in accomplishing Kline's goal of constant improvement are seniors Jennifer Spring and Heather Johnson, who were both first-team SCIAC last season.

Freshman point guard Kelli Obrero is among the new faces that will try to make their mark in Leopards history and lead the team to success this season. With regard to Obrero's ability, Kline said, "She sees the court well and has great ball handling skills."

On the Leopards chances for success and their ability to win SCIAC this season, Kline said, "We will be taking one game at a time. No one game is more important than the other."

Any hopes of winning SCIAC will need to be accompanied by a serious effort and great execution on the court because SCIAC will be tough to win, Kline said.

"The parity in the conference is what sets this conference apart from others," she said. "Cal Lutheran, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer will all be strong."

With Kline's focus on the improvement of her athletes on and off of the court, along with the contributions of Spring, Johnson and Obrero the Leopards should be a competitive force this year.
