Walker takes involvement to limit
Campus Times
December 11, 1998
Majoring in movement and sports science, senior Kevin Walker is an
active student on campus and schedules part of his time as an assistant
varsity basketball coach at Bonita High School. At La Verne he finds time
to be a resident assistant for the Oaks. "It's showed me a lot of responsibility
and a good chance to meet students," he said. Walker has been a member
of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity for four years, works as a computer consultant,
and has participated on the golf and basketball teams. After graduation
he plans to get his teaching credential and continue coaching high school
sports.
Kevin Walker says he knows almost all University of La Verne campus
residents by name, if not by face. That may seem like quite an achievement,
but Walker gets around. Consider the following resume:
·Resident assistant (R.A.) in the Oaks Residence Hall.
·Fraternity Pledge Educator.
·Fifteen-unit class load.
·Computer lab work study.
·Basketball coach at Bonita High School.
·Iota Man for Iota Delta Sorority.
·Three-year golf team member.
·Former member of the Interfraternity Council (IFC).
·Homecoming Court member.
·Former basketball team member.
Not bad for a guy who professes to being completely shy and uninvolved
before he came to ULV. He claims he was not good at meeting people and largely
kept to himself. But, once getting to know people, "I could talk their
heads off," he said.
Walker grew up in Auberry, Calif., a town of about 400 residents near
Fresno. During his senior year of high school, he was on the golf team,
basketball team and was selected as the athlete of the year for the combination
of his athletic and academic achievements.
He picked the University of La Verne because he wanted to attend a small
school and pursue a career in teaching-largely because that is the field
both his parents are in.
Not long after arriving, he pledged his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta,
and soon his schedule began picking up momentum faster than a ball rolling
down hill.
"My one greatest weakness is that I get involved," he said.
Walker is a movement and sports science major and is on track to graduate
this spring. He hopes to continue into coaching at the high school level
after graduating.
He became an "R.A. this year, after applying several times in the
past, for a number of reasons. He felt that the job would help him learn
leadership and coaching skills.
"It's kind of like being a teacher," he said, adding that
the position also is a financial help to his parents. "Free room and
board is nice, I won't lie."
Of course, with so many commitments, Walker has a very busy schedule.
Currently he gets going at 7 in the morning, and gets a short break in the
mid- afternoon before winding up his day near 10 at night. Because of the
hectic schedule, he recently cut back his commitments, including dropping
out of IFC.
"I need to learn to stay within my means."
Despite the cutback, Walker will not has not lost his touch with the
student body he has come to know so well.
