With the sun shining bright Saturday, La Verne's track and field teams competed in their first quad meet at home.

Taking advantage of the weather, sophomore Andre Ike shattered all other opponents in the men's high jump with a ULV record-setting jump of 6'8".

He was not alone in his success, however. Senior Eboni White took first place in the women's shotput with a throw of 38'4" and discus with a throw of 41.58'.

Freshman Diane Williams took first in the women's javelin with a hurl of 118'5", while sophomore Brandon Jones won the men's long jump with a jump of 21'6". Junior Bernard Corpuz and placed first (57.26) in the men's 400m hurdles, and the men's 4x400m hurdle team, comprised of Corpus, senior Ordell Williams, sophomore Nathan Swift and Wilson, also placed first with a time of 3:29.71.

Junior Maxine Mitchell blew away her opponents with a 1:08.30 time and a win in the women's 400m hurdles.

Even with these strong performances by ULV athletes, the meet wasn't all fun and games. While the teams did beat Caltech quite handily, both teams could not stay up to par with Occidental. The women lost 105-47, and the men, by a more narrow margin, lost 87-67.

"Occidental had more depth than us. I felt like that's why we didn't beat them as a team," said Ordell Williams.

"We weren't satisfied with the outcome Saturday, but we did have some outstanding performances," said head coach Pat Widolff.

While it is always important for athletes to give it their best, this meet represented the last meet of this season where a national qualifying score will not qualify an athlete for Nationals. The first date to qualify for Nationals was March 1.

This does not worry Widolff.

"In track, if you can do it once, you can do it again," he said.
