According to Charlotte Russe and Macy's buyers, fashion trendsetters
like tiny flower prints, oversized watches and appliqués on swept
up hairstyles are musts for the upcoming spring season. Katherine Przyblska
models a sun dress from Charlotte Russe, a men's watch from Fossil, and
butterfly hair clips from Macy's.
New fashion trends appear on the scene every day. Clothes, jewelry,
shoes and accessories change every season.
With summer right around the corner, fashion designers and fashion magazine
editors are creating more and more styles to flow with the constantly changing
moods and styles of young Americans.
The theme for summer '99 appears to be "Simplify." Simple
lines, combined with the bright colors of spring, creates some of the popular
new designs of the season.
Shorts are synonymous with summer, and this season, shorts are getting
even shorter than last year's styles.
Pink is the color in which to be seen in. It is the most popular new
trend in women's fashion this year and will be seen everywhere this summer.
"I think a lot of spaghetti strap tops, tube tops and shorts from
Old Navy will be popular again this summer," said freshman Allison
Alastuey.
Short haircuts popularized by many television and movie stars are finally
becoming less popular. Many women are opting for the sleek, straight look
for their summer hairdos.
Hair accessories are also jazzing up any summer outfit. Butterfly clips
and headbands are a few of summer's must haves.
Less is definitely more this summer. Many women are choosing the fresh,
make-up free look and wearing jewelry that does not draw too much attention.
New trends in men's fashions are also appearing. Bright colors and athletic
wear will dominate this summer.
According to a New York Times article, Cowgirl couture is back with
Levi's Jeans leading the fashion posse, with deepdark denim skirts and cuffed
jeans; peasant blouses, bandanna prints and dresses with other Wild West
motifs.
Grammy award winner Lauryn Hill's distinct style has been said to inspire
the new youthful craze.
Levi Strauss & Co. spokesperson Kim Sobel said the original blue
jean company is not only sponsoring the Miseducation Tour but also dressing
Hill as well.
"Lauryn liked several pieces from our current collection, including
the cargo pants, dark denim jeans and denim jacket ... and her input helped
inspire the special 10-piece collection she'll be wearing on her tour,"
Sobel said.
Even with the world's rapidly changing perception of what is "in,"
for most students, the classics never die.
No one can go wrong with a simple pair of jeans and a shirt for their
summer attire. Everybody has a favorite pair of jeans," commented sophomore
Richard Walsh. "No one can look bad in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt."
