For the first time in two years, the University of La Verne men's tennis
team had a conference victory. It defeated Whittier College, 4-3, at the
Nancy Blickenstaff Tennis Pavilion last Tuesday.
"It was a great win," said freshman Jarrod Hesler, who won
his singles match, 6-3, 6-1, over Gilbert Sanchez. "A lot of our guys
were able to hold on and pull through."
The Leopards (4-9) were successful in four of six singles matches and
were dominant in one of the three doubles matchups.
Besides Hesler, senior David Dang, junior Brian Rice and freshman Harold
Arellano were all victorious in their individual performances.
Dang trampled over his opponent, Sid Haksar, 6-1, 6-1. Rice defeated
Keala Hughes 7-6, 7-4, 6-1, but without a doubt, the most exciting match
of the day came in the last of the singles.
With both schools tied at three points apiece, Arellano narrowly defeated
Adriene Leung, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in a decisive match giving La Verne the win.
After the match, the joyous La Verne team rushed toward Arellano in celebration.
In doubles action, the duo of senior Sergio Velasquez and Hesler fought
to a 8-4 victory over Haksar and Hughes.
"We beat Whittier earlier but it was a non-conference match,"
said Velasquez. "This season has been frustrating but the moment Harold
won, we felt like champions."
The Leopards hope for successful ending to this weekend tournament starting
today. They will host the two-day Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) Tournament before ending the regular season starting
at 8:30 a.m.
"If we play as well as we have been for the past two weeks,"
said Hesler, "we should get a higher ranking."
