Robin Haaker made college softball look easy Saturday when the junior
pitcher went 3-for-3 with three doubles in the 7-2 win over hosting Pomona-Pitzer.
Haaker also pitched a three-hitter to advance the Leopards to 8-4 in
the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), 22-12
overall. She currently holds a .475 batting average, one of the best in
the SCIAC, and has a 1.94 ERA. She had five strikeouts and four walks.
"I'm stoked," said Haaker. "It seems that today, I remembered
how to hit hard. This is my best performance. I've never gone 3 for 3."
Haaker, the lead-off hitter, commenced action immediately in the first
inning. With the count full, Haaker was able to begin the game with a double
to left field. Followed by a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Kari Abbott,
senior left fielder Lindsey Weber hit an RBI single to score Haaker.
In the third inning, Haaker scored once again, this time from an Abbott
single to center field. Abbott then scored from from a Weber hit to bring
the score to 3-0. The Sagehens managed to answer back in the bottom of the
third.
With bases loaded, senior catcher Keeley Wynne hit a liner to right
field, scoring freshman pitcher Karen Hamilton but was thrown out at first
by Leopard right fielder Katie Andrews. Sophomore first baseman Sharon Silveira
hit into what became a fielder's choice and brought in senior outfielder
Emily Macrae for Pomona-Pitzer's final score of the game.
To begin the fourth, senior catcher Kadie Tillema hit a double to center
field. Two batters later, senior infielder Heather Johnson connected with
a single to left, scoring Tillema. Johnson scored on a fielder's choice
by a Jen Guerrero hit.
Senior infielder Sophia Garcia had an RBI single to bring in Haaker
in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Haaker hit an RBI double to score sophomore
infielder Melissa Macias for La Verne's final score.
Garcia went 2-for-4 on the day with a single and a double. For the Sagehens,
Macrae went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Only half of the effort was needed by the Leopards to gain both wins.
Saturday was originally scheduled to hold a double-header, but when Sagehen
freshman left fielder Shannon Coggins suffered an injury from the first
game, Pomona-Pitzer had no other option but to forfeit. Nine players are
necessary to be considered a team, and the Saghens had only eight.
This is the second game that the Sagehens (3-7, 6-18 overall) have forfeited
this season. They forfeited a win against Redlands in an early SCIAC matchup
for using an ineligible player.
The Leopards will conclude conference play tomorrow when the SCIAC single
round robin tournament enters its third and final day.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is in first place and, by the end of the weekend,
should be expected to capture the SCIAC championship. They are undefeated
in conference (12-0, 22-9 overall) and are ahead of Cal Lutheran, which
holds the second place standing by three games.
La Verne is in third place (8-4, 15-11 overall) in SCIAC.
