The American Cancer Society (ACS) of the Inland Valley Area and Fontana Branch will host the 1999 Relay for Life in memory of cancer victims and survivors.

Kristen Rathbun, mail clerk at the University of La Verne, is a team captain at the relay this year.

"My aunt was my motivation to participate in cancer events," she said.

There is a history of cancer on both sides of Rathbun's family. Included is her aunt, Angela Olivas, a breast cancer survivor and a current employee of the ACS.

The Relay for Life will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Chaffey College track in Rancho Cucamonga.

People from different civic organizations, hospitals, corporations and families will team up in groups of a minimum of 10 participants and they will take turns in the relay.

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 from donors prior to the event.

The entry fee for the event is $10 per person. Team members are encouraged to solicit donations and collect money before the event.

Last year, the ACS was able to invest $300 million in services and research to cancer patients through the Relay for Life event.
