A new addition to the Greeks on the University of La Verne campus are
the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority who joined the national organization
through the Cal Poly Pomona chapter last spring.
There are five women involved in the sorority: seniors Maisha Pryor,
Isa Lose, Gwenelle Warren, Ayana Brown and sophomore Danielle Cormier. Three
other women are also members, but attend Cal Poly Pomona.
"Our focus on our sorority is that we are a public service organization
and we hope to add to the La Verne community," Pryor said.
Originally founded in 1913 by 22 women at Howard University, the organization
concentrates on five programs-economics, education, political awareness
and involvement, international awareness and involvement, and physical/mental
health.
There are 800 chapters worldwide and there are eight regions-the Midwest,
Central, Eastern, Southwest, South Atlantic, Southern, and Far West.
Pryor discovered the sorority while attending Bennett College in Greensboro,
N.C. Upon her arrival to ULV, she decided to build a local chapter here.
Some of the events that have already been done were AIDS awareness,
safe sex awareness, and a candlelight vigil in memory of Tyisha Miller.
After the vigil was a program where police officers talked about police
brutality.
A clothing drive was also held and the clothes were donated to the David
and Margaret Home for Girls in La Verne.
Pryor hopes that the club gets recognized by ULV, and helps to create
diversity and get campuswide involvement.
