Groups complete college life
Campus Times
December 3, 1999
With all the negative occurrences in society, it is a pleasant change
to shed light upon positive influences and impacts. At the University of
La Verne, various support groups have been made available to the student
population and for good reason.
Due to the diversity of this campus, various organizations form to provide
social activity and acceptance, friendships, along with a sense of belonging;
and for many, the transition from high school to an institution of higher
learning becomes easier due to such support groups and programs.
The support groups on this campus and their leaders should be commended.
Each helps students create identities as they complete their college careers.
Some of these support groups include the Society of Leaders, the African
American Student Alliance, the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student Union and
the Latino Student Forum.
Not only are the support groups helpful in providing safe, social environments,
but they also help to make attending ULV a more enlightening and positive
experience.
Having these groups on this campus shows that the University supports
the theory that to educate on the importance of diversity, acceptance and
tolerance is crucial in any learning environment. The members are allowed
to meet in atmospheres to which they are able to relate and feel comfortable
in and are able to do so voluntarily.
Not only do such organizations provide the reassurance that the University
is moving forward, in terms of equality, equal representation and so forth,
toward the betterment of the future as well.
By all means the organizers and members of every support group on ULV's
campus should be recognized for the hard work, dedication and important
influences they serve and provide to the student population.
It is only with helping each other and being a supportive community
can we continue to educate to the degree the University has come to be known
for.
