

A specially designed program for credentialed teachers to acquire the Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development Certificate.
Through the University of La Verne's 12-unit CLAD Certificate program, credentialed teachers can earn the Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development Certificate. Upon completion of coursework, students can apply directly for the State of California certificate and are not required to take the state CLAD examination.
Teachers may transfer the 12 units of successfully completed CLAD Certified coursework to the Master of Education - Special Emphasis program.
The total CLAD program consists of 12 semester hours. Classes may be taken in any sequence and are offered 4-7 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. beginning in January, February, June, and September.

| EDUC 519 | Language and Literacy Development for English Language Learners |
| Develops an understanding of primary (L1) and secondary (L2) language acquisition processes and their concomitant relationships to concept formation; examines variables that contribute to successful experiences in the acquisition of language and the development of fluent reading strategies, and highlights developmental, linguistic, psycholinguistic, and cultural influences. | A theoretically based overview of the nature and content of culture, cultural interaction, and cultural diversity; explores how educators can provide culturally responsive instruction to the communities they serve. Includes 30 hours practicum. (4 semester units) | |
