Greeklife Principles and Benefits

reek Life has grown in the past twenty years to include six national and local fraternities. Phi Delta Theta (ΦΔΘ) and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣΑΕ) and sororities Iota Delta (ΙΔ), Phi Sigma Sigma (ΦΣΣ), Sigma Kappa (ΣΚ), and Alpha Omicron Pi (ΑΟΠ). The fraternities and sororities, although distinct and unique organizations are centered around the core principles of sisterhood and brotherhood, leadership, philanthropy and community service, scholarship, and social activities and events.

Brotherhood and Sisterhood
College is a place where lasting friendships are built; Greek life is a place where brotherhood/sisterhood is built. This special bond focuses on individuality and appreciation of differences, not conformity. Your brothers and sisters will cheer you on when you're successful and will support through difficult times. Membership in a Greek organization will provide you with lifelong bonds that continue beyond your years at the University of La Verne.

Leadership Greek organizations are dedicated to building our future leaders. Fraternities and sororities are self-governing organizations that provide a wealth of leadership opportunities for their members. Whether you are on a committee, holding an office in your chapter, or serving on the Interfraternity Council, National Pan- Hellenic Council, and/or College Panhellenic Association, there are many ways to explore your personal leadership abilities. Fraternity and sorority members are some of the most active and visible student leaders on campus. You will see Greeks participating as Orientation Week Leaders, in the Associated Students of the University of La Verne, on the Campus Activities Board, as R.A.s in Housing and Residential Life, on Intramurals teams, and various other clubs and organizations.

Philanthropy and Community Service
One of the most gratifying aspects of Greek like is the sense of pride that comes with involvement in philanthropic activities and community service. Each year the Greek community contributes thousands of dollars and numerous hours of service to various philanthropies and community agencies. Community service is one of the founding principles of all fraternities and sororities. No matter what your service interests may be, you will find opportunities to participate in both "hands-on" service and fundraising as part of the University of La Verne Greek community. When you visit with the chapter members during the recruitment process, be sure to ask about their philanthropy programs.

Scholarship
The ULV Greek community is known for their high scholarship and academic excellence. Chapters must maintain grade point average requirements for their active members and their new members. To assure the continuation of academic growth, chapters provide scholastic assistance through tutoring and group study sessions. ULV members pride themselves on maintaining GPA's consistently above their non-Greek peers. The All-Greek GPA consistently remains above the All-University average. Studies show that being in the Greek community also ensures a higher likelihood of graduation compared with students not involved.

Social Activities and Events
Offering a break from the demands of the classroom is one of the benefits of the Greek community. Throughout the year fraternities and sororities participate in many social events such as Greek Week, Athletic events, all-Greek mixers, cookouts, and spring formals. These events not only allow fraternity and sorority members to spend time with their chapters, but also gives them the opportunity to socialize with other Greeks.

In addition to the individual fraternities and sororities, Greek Life provides and active governance structure, which includes the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the College Panhellenic Association (CPA), and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Fraternity and sorority members are some of the most active student leaders at the University of La Verne. They are involved not only in their own organizations, but also can be seen serving in various other leadership roles on campus. Joining a fraternity or sorority will provide life-long friendships and excellent opportunities for personal growth.
