Certain actions toward the Resident or Program Assistants, staff, building staff, or professional staff will not be tolerated and will be dealt with very severely through the discipline process. Violations include:
Fire Alarms: It is a misdemeanor to set off a false fire alarm and the act is punishable with up to six months in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1000.00. Tampering with, or in any way disabling, a fire alarm is a serious offense, which can lead to even more severe consequences. Note: Water can activate the fire alarm system. In addition to the criminal sanctions, the University will impose a $150.00 fine and the offender will face other administrative sanctions. The Fire Department can cite the offender for a misdemeanor, and the matter then becomes a court case. When a fire alarm is sounded, all students are required to exit the building. Failure to exit the building in the event of an alarm will result in a sanction. Individuals and/or groups may be fined for any intentional or unintentional and false alarms.
Firearms-Explosives: Possession of firearms, BB guns, ammunition, and explosives (including firecrackers) is strictly prohibited on campus. Storage of firearms must be arranged off-campus. NOTE: Any item that has the same appearance as a weapon, will be considered a weapon. Possession of such is cause for question and warning. All firearms, replicas, and/or explosives will be confiscated immediately and turned over to the Campus Safety Department and the person in posession of the item may be subjected to administrative sanctions.
Fires: No open fires are permitted in or around the Residence Halls. This includes, but is not limited to, burning candles, sterno devices, and incense. BBQs are permitted only in designated outdoor areas with prior staff authorization.
Exceptions: Fires are permitted only in the gas-burning fireplace in the Harris Lounge in the Oaks (B-Bottom) and in the wood-burning fireplace in Stu-Han (only wood, fire logs, and enough paper to start a fire are to be used in this fireplace). Special events such as the Homecoming Bonfire must get La Verne Fire Department special permits.
Use of Candles at Sponsored Events: Any club or organization using candles during approved events scheduled to be held on the ULV campus will be required to have a fire extinguisher and a person trained in the use of fire extinguishers present at the event. You will be required to indicate on your Facility Request Form (available in the Student Center) if you intend to use candles during your event. Fire extinguisher training can be obtained by calling the Operations Department. Fire extinguishers can be checked out from the Campus Safety and Transportation Office with Student I.D. and proof of training from Operations. Drip guards for candles are mandatory. The wax can permanently damage carpeting. Housekeeping will charge the event organizer to remove wax from carpeting, floor, or other surface.
Fire Safety: Residence Hall Fire Safety is a very serious matter. Violations can be considered a direct threat to the life and overall safety of the residents and emergency personnel and are handled accordingly. All residents are required to evacuate the premises immediately during a fire alarm. Residents must exit, stay at least 100 feet from the building, and evacuate to the designated areas as instructed by Residence Hall Staff. Instructions will be given by the Residence Hall Staff or other university officials when it is safe to return to the building. Failure to respond to a fire alarm or to follow directions given by the Residence Life Staff will be subject to conduct review.

Excessive trash in any public area is included in this policy. In other words, all residents hold responsibility for all public areas. If the person(s) is not identified, the cost will be charged to all residents in the surrounding areas and possibly the entire Residence Hall, depending on the extent of the damage.
Guests Visitation: All residents are responsible for the actions and behavior of their guests. Residents, when in the residence halls, must escort all guests. Male guests must always be escorted when visiting Stu-Han residents. Occasionally, residents may wish to have a family member or friend stay with them. Overnight guest visitation is restricted to no more than one person at a time for more than two nights per month. The host must be a resident of the room the guest is staying in. In addition, the host should receive the permission of his/her roommate(s) prior to inviting guests. Students and/or their guests may not sleep, cohabitate, or store belongings in common (public) areas. Any situation involving disruptive behavior or frequent guests will be considered a policy violation and will be addressed by a staff member. Visitors who cause a disruption or violate policies are the responsibility of their host. The Office of Housing and Residential Life has the right to restrict specific guests if they have been disruptive or have violated Housing or University policies. It should be understood, however, that the right of a student to live in reasonable privacy takes precedence over the right of a roommate to entertain a guest in the room, residence hall, or on campus.
The University believes that overnight guests are always an infringement upon the privacy and convenience of the persons sharing the space of a room or residence hall and should only occur on a limited and infrequent basis. Guests may not use a bed assigned to another student without the consent of the student whose bed is to be used. Students should bring any and all infringements of this policy to the attention of the RA of their area. Should a conflict arise between roommates because of the nature and frequency of visits made by guests, a hall staff member should be contacted.
Halogen Lamps: Halogen Lamps (including desk lamps) are prohibited in residence halls.
Hazing: Hazing or intimidation of any student is forbidden. Hazing shall be defined as any act or activity by an organization or group or by a member of that organization or group in which a member(s) or prospective member(s) may be subjected to an activity which may cause or create a risk to one's physical or mental or physical health. Hazing includes any act or activity which may cause (but is not limited to): fear or intimidation, embarrassment or ridicule, physical exhaustion, endangerment, harm, mutilation or alteration of any part(s) of the body, mental fatigue, harassment or duress and defacement, damage or destruction of property. The intent of the act or the consent or cooperation of the hazing recipient will not constitute a defense. Hazing is not limited to members of groups or organizations. The University or the hazing recipient may charge an individual and/or the officers of a recognized organization with responsibility for the hazing act(s) both on and off campus.

Each resident is responsible for the proper care of his/her room, section, and kitchen areas including the guidelines for break/holiday periods and check out. Respect for fellow residents and Housing staff is shown by properly disposing of garbage and boxes and by not creating unnecessary messes in hallways, individual student rooms, lounges, kitchens and bathrooms. Personal trash may not be left or disposed in public areas. With reasonable notice, the Housekeeping staff may dispose of abandoned items of minimal value in kitchens or bathrooms.
Lofting/Bunking/Furniture Rearrangement: If you wish to have a bed lofted, bunked or furniture rearranged, you must fill out a Maintenance Request Form. Facilities Management will perform this service only once per room at no charge. Further visits will result in a $50.00 charge for each additional visit. This charge is for non-maintenance visits only. Residents may not attempt to loft, bunk or lower a bed or construct or do any type of repair on any furniture or ULV property. No raised beds (cinderblocks, PVC pipe, leg extensions, etc.) are allowed. In addition, Facilities Management will charge $100.00 to the appropriate building/floor for each item collected. Moving furniture from the lounges to individual rooms prevents its use by others and is prohibited by the University. Motorized Vehicles: All motorized vehicles, including mopeds, motorized scooters, and motorcycles, are to be parked, stored and driven only in designated areas (parking lots and roads) and not in any of the residential buildings or adjacent sidewalks and grass.
Noise: Every student is entitled to proper study and considerate rest conditions in the Residence Halls. Any resident may request that any other resident or group of residents cease any activity which is interfering with his/her reasonable ability to study, rest, or quietly enjoy the community. When requested to be quiet in one of these situations, a resident shall comply or face possible disciplinary action. A radio, stereo, or television which can be heard in other rooms is considered too loud. The right to quiet supersedes the right to make noise.

Residents must inform the Housing Office of all suspected or actual cases of contagious disease such as hepatitis, meningitis or chicken pox. For safety and wellness reasons, students who must use hypodermic needles or other skin piercing tools must dispose of them in a properly labeled, puncture resistant, leak-proof container.
