Introduction

In response to this federal mandate, the University has established a research protocol for all undergraduate, graduate and faculty research projects (see IRB Policies and Procedures link at left). To effectively administer the program, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) made up of Area Representatives from the four ULV Colleges, a non-research member, community members and an Institutional Review Board Chair (see IRB Members link at left) have been appointed to ensure the University meets the federal requirements for review and documentation of all research activities involving human participants.

To acquaint you with the program and assure consistent implementation, all faculty, administration and staff involved with research involving human participants must complete IRB training. Any IRB application received from a faculty member who has not completed the training, or any student whose advisor has not completed the training, will be returned without review.

The ULV IRB Certification process begins with the National Institute of Health's Computer Based Training (CBT) program on-line at http://cme.cancer.gov/c01. At the end of the CBT, you must print the Certificate of Completion and forward the document to the Institutional Review Board c/o Dr. Al Clark, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at ULV. In addition, you are required to read the publication entitled, "University of La Verne Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Participants in Research Policies and Procedures" available by clicking on the link at the left. After you have read the Policies and Procedures, you must complete the University's on-line tutorial found at http://www.ulv.edu/irb/cert.phtml, print the Certificate of Completion, sign and date the Certificate, and send it to the IRB Office c/o Dr. Al Clark, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at ULV. To facilitate data collection and standardized reporting, you are encouraged to download the on-line applications and forms available at http://www.ulv.edu/irb/forms.phtml.

For guidance concerning ethical standards and federal requirements, we recommend you read publications listed in this suggested bibliography.

Should you have questions or concerns, please contact the Institutional Review Board Chair at clarka@ulv.edu or (909) 593-3511, extension 4240.
