What should I do if my visa expires?
Paying a "Friendly" visit to the U.S. Consulate
If you are leaving the U.S. and your visa has expired, you must renew it. You will renew it by visiting the U.S. consulate in your home country. To renew your visa you will need:
- A new financial certification--if your financial certification for ULV is over 12 months old.
- Evidence of enrollment for the upcoming term and transcripts of your previous work at ULV. Transcripts are available in the Registrar's Office (http://www.ulv.edu/registrar/).
- Your passport--valid for at least six months beyond the expiration date of your I-20
- Two recent passport size photos.
- Copies of all previously issued I-20s.
- Proof of maintaining ties to your home country(if possible).
- Money to pay the application fee (varies depending on the location of the embassy)
- You will need a new I-20 only if the information on your old I-20 has changed significantly--i.e. you have changed an academic program or your the financial requirements have changed significantly. http://www.usembassy.state.gov/
Note that you may not need all of the above documentation. We do recommend that you have it available. When you interview with the official, remember that you will have only a few minutes. Be clear, direct, courteous and honest.
