Request for Letter
For Family Member or Friend to Visit the U.S.
You will need to get a letter from the International & Study Abroad Center if you want to invite your parents, other family members, or friends to visit you in the United States. Your visitors will need to provide the following information to consular officials when they apply for a visitor's (B-2) visa at the closest American Embassy/Consulate:
- Proof that you are full-time student at ULV and have maintained your F-1 status;
- Evidence of your visitors' intent to return home after their visit; and
- Proof that you/they have enough funds to cover their expenses while they are visiting.
Steps for obtaining a visitor's visa:
- Request a letter from the ISAC by providing the information requested on the form below. This will verify that you are a student in good standing, are enrolled full time, and why you are inviting your relatives/friends to visit you. Please allow 3 days for our office to issue a letter. We will inform you via e-mail when it is ready.
- Make copies of your transcript, your I-20, your passport and visa, and your I-94 form to provide your visitors.
- Obtain proof of funds showing you will be able to support your visitors in the form of an official bank letter or statement--or alternatively you visitors can provide their own proof of finance for their stay.
- Write an invitation letter for your visitors, stating the period they will be visiting, with dates if possible, and verifying that you will provide financial support for them while they are here (unless, as mentioned above, they can show financial proof themselves).
The more documentation you provide, the better.
There are no guarantees that the consulate will issue a visitor's visa, and occasionally
they are denied. Please call the ISAC if you need more information or have any questions about this process.
