History of the University

The University of La Verne was founded in 1891 as Lordsburg College by members of the Church of the Brethren, a Protestant religious group. It's founders had moved west from Pennsylvania to settle. Both the college and the agricultural community were named La Verne in 1917.

In 1955 the College was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and in 1965 it awarded the first master's degree programs off campus. The College of Law, located in nearby Ontario, began in 1965. The College became the University of La Verne in 1977, preserving the name La Verne College for the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences.

The University continues to develop and add quality programs.
