Rail System

Metrolink

La Verne commuters can travel to downtown Los Angeles on the new Metrolink (Southern California's commuter rail network) line which offers round-trip train service Monday through Saturday. The metrolink has five lines: Ventura County, Antelope Valley, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange County.

The closest station can be found at 205 Santa Fe Street (off of Garey, south of Bonita) in Pomona. The location is within walking distance from the University of La Verne. The way to get there would be to walk down Bonita to Fulton road. When you get to Fulton road make a right and then make a left at the station (which is before arrow highway) and you will be at the metrolink.

MTA (Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority) - Metro Rail

The MTA is the Los Angeles County Transit Authority (MTA). The Metro serves Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. It includes the Metro Rail (including the metro blue, green, red and gold lines) and Metro Bus system. The Metro Rail has four lines.

Amtrak

Another rail service is the Amtrak. The Amtrak is the National Passenger Railroad that operates passenger trains up and down the California coast and across the United States. Amtrak travelers can make connections at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

Amtrak's Pomona Station is located near the center of Old Pomona, on Commercial Street near Garey Avenue. The station is used by Metrolink commuter trains, Foothill Transit Buses, and Amtrak's Sunset Limited, which stops in Pomona on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays in both directions. The Sunset Limited operates three times a week on a schedule connecting Los Angeles to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

There is no ticketing, package express or checked baggage for Amtrak passengers at the Pomona Station. Passengers wishing to travel on the Sunset Limited must have reservations, which can be obtained from an Amtrak travel agent, Amtrak's telephone service 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245), or via the Amtrak national web page: http://www.amtrak.com/


Bus service

Foothill Transit

Foothill Transit is part of the MTA Metro system, the region's integrated transportation system. This company provides bus service for the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. Lines pass through Foothill Boulevard and Bonita Avenue to points outside the city. Fare
Local fare is $1.10; Metro cards can be purchased in any value from $5 to $150, and provide a discounted fare.

Transfer
With your paid Foothill Transit fare, you will receive one free transfer card (upon request). You may use transfers once within the printed time and date, regardless of direction. This allows more time to eat shop or run errands while on your ride. Foothill Transit transfer cards are also accepted by MTA, please check their site for more information on their policies and/or to simply to find out more information go to: http://www.mta.net/

Trip Planner
An easy way to get directions to your destination can be done through the website http://www.foothilltransit.org/

  1. Click on Ride the bus
  2. Then you click on the Icon link
  3. Then you scroll down to Trip planner
  4. Then you click on MTA TRIP PLANNER http://socaltransport.org/tm_pub_start.php

Example:
If you wanted to go from ULV to Montclair Plaza (shopping mall) your next step would be to

  1. Go to Where for the location and type in the Start location of La Verne
  2. For the End location you would put Montclair Plaza
  3. Under When you would put what day and the time that you would like to leave
  4. Then you click on Find trips
    • The bus that you would ride would be Foothill Transit 492 (Montclair Transit Ctr) heading east from Bonita/B street (SE corner) to Moreno street/Lindero Ave. The cost of this trip would be $1.10 (as of February 2005) with a distance of about 5.14 miles and a trip time average of about 19 minutes.
  5. For Return trips you need to scroll down to the bottom of the schedule page and click on Return trips
  6. Put in when you would like to Return (be sure to include the date and time)
  7. Then you click on Find trips to see the bus schedule for that route on the day that you selected

California Shuttle Bus (Los Angeles to/from San Francisco)

This shuttle bus picks up at several locations within the Los Angeles area and travels directly to the San Francisco Bay area in 6 hours. Only $45 One Way! (as of February 2005)
