7. Using the Internet

A. Internet as an information source

What is the Internet?
The Internet is a network of computers. Web pages reside on computers, and if your computer is connected to the Internet, you can access some of these web pages. To access and display these web pages, you use a software program called a browser. NETSCAPE, MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER and OPERA are some of the popular browsers.

What kind of information can I find on the Internet?
At last count there were over three billion web pages on the Internet. The kind of information available includes recipes, biographies, news, facts, statistical data, government reports, library catalogs, etc. Only some of this information will be valuable to you as a university student doing research. Please keep in mind that only some professors will accept information located on the Internet.

What kind of information is not readily available on the Internet?
Full-text articles from scholarly journals, electronic periodical databases or older publications are not readily available or always available free. Libraries (such as Wilson Library) subscribe to periodical databases which include full-text of periodical articles and make these available to their students.
