Tutoring Guidelines
When parents entrust their children to the center, they are expecting a degree of professionalism from all members of the center. The following guidelines address the expectations
of our Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential Candidates.
- Tutors are expected to be on time for tutorials.
In order for the center to be able to uphold absence and late policies for
the children, we need to present an example to parents. In addition, as
you will note in class syllabi, critical class points are deducted for tardies.
If stuck in traffic, or an emergency develops that will prevent timely arrival,
call the coordinator at (909) 593-3511 ext. 4660, and she will let the professor
and tutee's parent know.
- In the event of an absence for parent-teacher conferences, Back-to-School Night, emergency, illness, etc., tutors must make arrangements with parents for a day to make up the time missed. Let the coordinator know about the arrangements, so she can be certain that the center will
be open and available for your session.
- In the event of an unexpected absence or illness, it is the responsibility of the tutor to let his or her professor and the center coordinator know, well prior to tutoring time, so arrangements can be made for the tutee.
- Tutors are expected to come to class and tutoring sessions prepared; this includes xeroxing and session planning. The Literacy Center does not have much of a budget for xeroxing and can only xerox materials for our candidates in an emergency situation (example: halfway through tutoring, a candidate realizes that a page from a xeroxed test passage is missing).
- Cell phones must be placed on "vibrate," "silent," or turned off during tutoring and classtime.
- Tutors must dress professionally. While we do not expect tutors to dress in suits, shorts, for example, are not acceptable.
- Tutors must meet and greet parents at the starting time of tutoring. This lets parents know that their children are safe and accounted for, while also giving them the opportunity to ask questions or supply relevant information.
- Children MUST be accompanied by an adult AT ALL TIMES once they are in the center. Children are not, under any circumstances, to leave the center unless accompanied by a tutor or a parent/guardian.
- When tutoring sessions are finished, tutors are expected to be available to parents for any questions, comments, or concerns that they may have.
- Please help make sure that parents sign your tutee in and out as they come and go.
- As the end of a tutoring semester approaches, many parents begin asking for their children to be tutored for additional semesters. The Literacy Center maintains a large, and always growing, waiting list. When approached by a parent requesting additional tutoring, refer the parent to the coordinator--please do not tell the parent that his/her child will be, or might be, re-admitted into the program. Not only does refering back to the coordinator take pressure off of you, it removes any possibility of differing information and the potential disappointment that may result.
- Tutors may check out curricular books and materials from the Literacy Center; please fill out the check-out list when you remove anything from the center. When the item is brought back to the center, make sure to make note of its return on the check-out list, so you will not be held responsible for it. Please return the borrowed item to its original place.
- Tutors are welcome to check out books from the Reading for Fun Room; the card is to be filled out and turned in.
- As you would want in your classroom, please
put away what you take out and use.
