Program Information

The University of of La Verne Reading Department offers professional educators three programs to increase their effectiveness in the areas of reading education: The Reading Certificate, The Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential, and The Master of Education in Reading. Designed for classroom teachers, teacher specialists, and administrators, the programs may be pursued concurrently.


Reading Certificate and Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential These programs offer theoretical foundations and practical application opportunites for professional educators who desire to develop their skills and knowledge in the area of reading education.

Master of Education in Reading (M.Ed.) This advanced degree program for education professionals integrates theory and practice to enhance knowledge and skills applicable to the area of reading.

    All Certificate and Credential Courses (33 units), plus one additional course:
    EDUC 598 Graduate Seminar (Reading) (3)

Program Requirements
Students in the ULV reading programs must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average. All degree coursework must be completed within five years of registration as a graduate student. To accomodate students' professional schedules and personal needs, courses are offered in late afternoons and evenings. All students must have Internet access capability

Transfer Requirements
Up to six semester hours of credit may be transferred into a University of La Verne graduate degree program if:

  • the units were acceptable as graduate degree coursework in transferring school,
  • the units are applicable to the chosen degree program at the University of La Verne,
  • a grade of "B" or better was earned for the units, and
  • the coursework was taken from an accredired institution within five years prior to transfer to the University of La Verne.
