V. The Campus Expands

The Campus Expands
In order to meet growing needs, the University has embarked on a plan for property acquisition and expansion. This includes the leasing and purchasing of property adjacent to currently owned University land, as well as the acquisition of an approximately 20-acre parcel known as the Campus West property south of Arrow Highway and the co-purchase (with the City of La Verne) of 36 acres of adjacent MWD property.

These sites have been carefully selected to minimize potential negative impacts on surrounding property, including neighborhood residences and businesses. As a demonstration of the University's commitment to maintain the residential character of the adjacent neighborhoods and to minimize intrusion into these areas, the Campus Master Plan includes a commitment to sell residential properties it owns along 3rd Street with the intent that they would be returned to a residential use as soon appropriate space is available for the relocation of the functions housed in these properties.

B. Campus Expansion
In 2002, the University acquired a 20-acre parcel of land, referred to as Campus West. The property is relatively flat, unimproved, and separated from the adjacent Metropolitan Water District (MWD) property by a flood control channel. The property is bounded by the Union Pacific/Metrolink rail lines on the north and the Adobe Property and Puddingstone Road to the south. Through a cooperative venture with the City of La Verne, the University is planning the development of the Campus West and former MWD site as a location for University and City athletic fields.

This project would allow the University to relocate existing athletic fields in the campus core to allow for critical expansion of academic and studentoriented buildings and additional parking. There is also potential for the further development of education programs and facilities adjacent to the College of Law site in Ontario.
