Overview
Mission: The mission of the ULV Microscopy and Imaging Center is to provide imaging resources for a broad range of academic programs and research projects.  In the core tradition of ULV, the center also provides services to the community. Resources: The resources of the Microscopy and Imaging Center include research grade transmission and reflectance microscopes, capable of most standard modes, including phase contrast and fluorescence photomicroscopy .  The Center also maintains a JEOL 6460LV Scanning Electron Microscope - Energy Dispersive X-ray system. An STEM attachment allows the generation of transmission electrion micrographs.   Sample preparation equipment includes microtomes, a glass knife maker, a critical point drier, and a sputter coater.   The equipment and options have been chosen to provide the flexibility needed to support the diverse needs of our institution.  For more information on equipment click on the equipment link above .

Major areas of support:  The Microscopy and Imaging Center is a central facility that supports not only the three departments of the Natural Science Division but also programs as diverse as Anthropology and Art. The facility serves three main functions:

• Education: Our goal is to provide students with a solid background in theory as well as hands on experience.  The resources of the ULV Microscopy and Imaging Center are all available for direct use by students.  With knowledge and skill, comes understanding, opportunity and the power to improve oneself and the communities of which our students are a part.
   
• Research: The Center contains powerful research grade tools for use in a broad range of research projects.  Areas of recent activity include research in archeology, material science, hydrogen fuel cell technology, lead in the environment, plant taxonomy, paleobotany, fresh water ecology and others.
   
• Services to the community The University of La Verne also expresses its mission through service to the community .  Perhaps the most visible example is our outreach program, which reveals the wonders of science and technology to  K-12 students through imagery and hands on experience.  Another significant area of support to the University and communities is through analysis of environmental samples for lead, asbestos and other hazards.
