The Grand Canyon National Park Foundation is currently seeking applicants for the following two projects for Summer 2004:

The program is geared to graduate-level university students with interest and experience in natural resource management, wildlife biology, conservation biology, environmental science, restoration ecology, and/or parks and recreation. The intern selected for the carnivore research project will work with NPS Science Center staff to quantify the relative importance of species interactions in determining the spatial pattern and distribution of carnivore communities. The intern will also have opportunities to participate in the California condor monitoring program, mountain lion distribution data sampling and analysis, and chronic wasting disease sampling. The intern should be able to work in remote areas and have the ability to work independently at times. Backpacking is required. Field identification skills for target species sign are desirable.

Candidates should also be able to reliably locate field plots, complete field forms, operate and maintain GPS unit and other field equipment, utilize map-and-compass navigation skills, enter and maintain collected data in electronic formats (databases, spreadsheets, GPS, GIS), and thoroughly document all fieldwork using field notebooks, survey forms, maps, and cameras.
