The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is pleased to announce that the University of La Verne is partnering with Google to provide new student University email accounts through their student Gmail offering. Effective Fall 2008, all students will be issued new @laverne.edu Gmail accounts. The following FAQ will help you get detailed and up-to-date information. Please check this site regularly for updates between now and September!

About the New Student @laverne.edu Gmail Accounts…

• What is this new student Gmail account, @laverne.edu account?
  
  The new @laverne.edu Gmail accounts are made available to all La Verne students thanks to the partnership between the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the University of La Verne and Google. Starting Fall 2008, all students will be able to use the new “@laverne.edu” email system via the Gmail Web interface as well as take advantage of many Google tools such as Google Calendar.

• What are the benefits for me to have a student Gmail account?
  
  With the new student Gmail account, you will get:
  
  1. 6 GB of mail storage space instead of 25 MB you have with the old university account;
  2. A lifetime email account that will not expire even after you leave the university;
  3. Proven reliability and ease of use thanks to Google’s extensive infrastructure and friendly Web interface;
  4. Collaboration features such as Google Calendar;
  5. Better SPAM filtering;
  6. The ability to use Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird, and other clients to access your email, in addition to the web interface; and
  7. The ability to access email through your data capable cell device.

• When does the transition happen?
  
  The new accounts were made available on the 1st of September, 2008.

• Does my email address change?
  
  Yes. You will be able to find out your new account name and password when you log into your MyULV account. The new email account name will be formatted as follows:
  firstname.lastname@laverne.edu
  
  Note: There might be a number attached to your Gmail address if needed (e.g. joe.smith02@laverne.edu).

• Will I receive my emails sent to the old @ulv.edu address?
  
  Yes. Emails sent to your @ulv.edu account will automatically be re-routed to your new @laverne.edu account.
  
  

• How does the transition impact the CALEA logins?
  
  You will be able to log into the Internet in computer labs using either your old @ulv.edu or your new @laverne.edu accounts through December 31st. Starting January 1, 2009, you will only be able to log in using your new @laverne.edu account.

Who's Affected

  Yes, all current students at University of La Verne will automatically get a new @laverne.edu Gmail account.

• What will change when I graduate or leave the University?
  
  Your @laverne.edu Gmail address will continue to work after you graduate or leave the University.

• Can current alumni have new @laverne.edu Gmail accounts?
  
  Alumni will be able to apply for an @laverne.edu Gmail account starting October 1, 2008 through the Office of University Advancement.

• Will faculty and staff be eligible to get the @laverne.edu Gmail accounts?
  
  Not at this time unless they are an active student. Faculty and staff will be issued with new Microsoft Exchange accounts sometime in the December/January timeframe for business purposes.

How Do I Get Started

• How do I access my new @laverne.edu Gmail?
  
  Your account should already be created for you by September 1^st, 2008. Follow these steps to access the @laverne.edu Gmail account:
  
  
  1. Go to the MyULV to find out your new username and password. To do so:
  1. Click on the “MyULV” icon at the bottom of the University of La Verne home page at http://www.ulv.edu/
  2. Click on the “Enter Secure Area” link
  3. Log in with your User ID and PIN
  4. Once enter the secure area, click the link “HERE” to enter the Gmail Account Information page where you can get your student @laverne.edu Gmail account name and default password
  2. Once you have your Gmail account name and password, go to the University of La Verne home page at http://www.ulv.edu/;
  3. Click on the “Student Gmail” button at the bottom of the page
  4. Log in to the @laverne.edu Gmail system by entering your User name and Password

• Why can't I log into my account through the Google site?
  
  @laverne.edu Gmail is University of La Verne's installation of the Gmail for Education software suite. Because of account customization and security requirements, users must log in through La Verne's authentication system at the URL provided above.

• What browser(s) are recommended to access @laverne.edu Gmails?
  
  Google recommends that you use Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2 in order to access the latest Google features. For more information on the web browsers that Google supports, see the Google website.

Privacy and Security

• Is my @laverne.edu Gmail account secure and private?
  
  University of La Verne has taken steps to ensure that your student data is protected above and beyond a publicly available account.
  
  Google has signed a contract committing them to uphold a strict privacy policy and to always treat your personal information with the utmost care and security. You can read more about Google Privacy & Security. Keep in mind that Google has agreed that University of La Verne student data is subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) when in Google's possession.

• Will Google show their ads in my email content page?
  
  No. University of La Verne has turned off the advertisements Google normally inserts to your email content page when you use a regular Gmail account.
  
  Note: A small ad may be shown in alumni accounts.
