Religion / Philosophy Department

"The most unique characteristic of the Religion and Philosophy Department is the personal relationship that seems to be formed with all the students. Of course I got an excellent education there, but it's the interaction between the professors and students that accounts for my experience there."

What will a Major in Religion or Philosophy do for me?

A major in Religion or Philosophy will help you to develop your own coherent society through reflection upon values and the honing of critical thinking skill. You will be exposed to a broad scope of philosophical and theological ideologies that have given rise to the political, economic, scientific and technological realities of today. You will be encouraged to participate in intercultural/international experiences outside of the classroom and be challenged to think about individual responsibility for global citizenship.

Through cultivating these traits, those who major in Religion or Philosophy are well prepared for graduate studies in a broad variety of fields. Those majoring in Religion are likely to enter careers in church ministries, Para-church ministries, pre or post secondary education, Peace Corps, social service, and more. Those majoring in Philosophy are likely to enter careers in Law, post-secondary or graduate education, business ethics, bio-medical ethics, politics, and more.

Though an undergraduate major in Religion or Philosophy does not promise an entry-level job position, it is significant that those in higher management positions have a degree in either one of these fields or in a related Humanities field.

"The education I received in the Religion/Philosophy Department provided me with the critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity to succeed in graduate school." - Shannon Beets, class of '98

"My religion courses at the University of La Verne taught me to think theologically, lured me into deeper understanding, challenged my preconception, and enhanced my faith. When I went on for graduate level work I felt prepared academically and spiritually." - Rev. Susan Boyer, Pastor of the La Verne Church of the Brethren, La Verne, California
