Benefits of Group Counseling
The ULV Counseling Center offers several therapy and support groups. Group counseling gives you a chance to talk about current concerns with a small group of other students. While participating in group therapy, you will be able to hear from others who are experiencing similar situations, understand more about yourself by hearing feedback from others, and appreciate individual differences. Group counseling can also help you express feelings, experiment with new behaviors, and try new ideas.
Feeling Comfortable in Group Counseling
It may take some time for you to feel comfortable in group counseling. As you begin to trust others, you will may choose to take more risks. It is up to you to decide how much you want to participate in group. You may choose to share your concerns, listen to another person, express your reactions, ask questions, provide support, and seek support. It is important to be patient in allowing the group to develop.
Preparing for Group Counseling
Before each group session, it may be useful to think about your expectations for the process. You may find that over time your initial goals change as you listen to other members and discover other issues. If you do not feel like your expectations are being met in group, it may be important to discuss this with the group members and/or group leaders. Group counseling can be a wonderful place to try new behaviors and ways of expressing yourself.
