The Resume
Objective 1: Students will learn that their resume is a marketing tool designed to help them get a job interview. Throughout their session students will learn about formatting options and strategies to help them summarize key points of their resume.
Rationale:
- A great resume will elaborate on a candidateÕs skills and highlight accomplishments of past jobs. A resume will help candidates navigate the first stage of the job-application process and if done successfully, can lead to an interview with an employer.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following questions: 1.) As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I now understand that my resume is a tool designed to help me get an interview. And 2.) As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I learned the various formatting options and strategies to help me summarize key points on my resume. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 Ð strongly agree, 4 Ð agree, 3 Ð neutral, 2 Ð disagree and 1 Ð strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 2: Students will learn how to layout their past work experience in reverse chronological order and list training and education related to the position they are applying for.
Rationale:
- Employers read resumes from top to bottom and left to right. Therefore, even if a chronological resume is being written, the student must list their most important (related) job and information about that job first.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I understand how my past work experience should be laid out: A.) in chronological order, from the first job I had to present, B.) in reverse chronological order with my most recent position first, or C.) in any order I think fits best for this particular employer.
- Students will submit their resumes for review to the Career Counselor and will be evaluated on this outcome utilizing a rubric developed by the Director of Career Services (planned implementation in fall 2007).
Objective 3: Students will learn how their resume should focus on their current job target and how it should describe the skills, knowledge and experience that are needed to perform that target job.
Rationale:
- According to studies, employers will spend 11 to 15 seconds scanning a resume for relevance and best-fit for the position. Success in getting an interview is dependent on creating a resume that easily identifies those skills and experience.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I now understand how to create a resume that fully describes my skills, knowledge and experiences that are needed to perform a targeted job. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 Ð strongly agree, 4 Ð agree, 3 Ð neutral, 2 Ð disagree and 1 Ð strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
- Students will submit their resumes for review to the Career Counselor and will be evaluated on this outcome utilizing a rubric developed by the Director of Career Services (planned implementation in fall 2007).
Objective 4: Students will learn how to show their accomplishments, not just past job duties and descriptions. They will also be able to summarize those accomplishments in simple, powerful, action statements that emphasize the result that benefit the employer.
Rationale:
- The student needs to write a resume that is different and distinct from everyone else applying for the same job. It should be based on their education, experiences, activities, and specific to the job they are pursuing. The resume should be written as an accomplishment document not a job description.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following questions: 1.) As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I understand how to show my accomplishments on my resume and not just my job duties and descriptions. And 2.) As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I understand how to use simple, powerful, action statements that emphasize the results that benefit a potential employer.
Objective 5: Students will learn how to communicate through their resume the skills, values and interests that are most important to them personally.
Rationale:
- The goal of a resume is to get an interview and ultimately land the job. Students must not only gear the resume to each employer and the employerÕs Òideal candidateÓ, but insure that they (the student) are applying for jobs that fit their personal skills, interests and values.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I am better able to communicate my skills, values and interests that are important to me personally in the targeted position. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 Ð strongly agree, 4 Ð agree, 3 Ð neutral, 2 Ð disagree and 1 Ð strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 6: Students will learn about resume presentation and the importance of utilizing correct spelling and grammar.
Rationale:
- The resume is a strong starting foundation in a job search. It should be formatted so it is easy to read. Students should check spelling and grammar for errors, not relying fully on ÒSpellcheckerÓ which will find spelling errors but not correct word usage. Errors on the resume can be used to reject applicant.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of the Career Counseling session, students will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of my Career Counseling experience, I now understand how to make my resume stand out from others and the importance of utilizing correct spelling and grammar.
