Greek Life
Learning Outcome Planning Objectives
A Program of the Office of Student Life
Objective 1: Students will participate in social programs and activities within their organization and will develop meaningful friendships and relationships with other group members at the University of La Verne
Rationale:
- Social and Student engagement opportunities are central to retention and overall ULV satisfaction of students. Social integration (Tinto, 1975 and Tinto, 1993) is critical for student success and can be measured through students' peer connections on campus.
Measures:
- Students will complete a likert scale questionnaire which asks a question related to their personal experiences as members within the ULV Greek community. Students will be asked the following question: As a result of my Greek Life experience, I have had the opportunity to participate in social programs which have helped me develop meaningful friendships and relationships with other members of my organization. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 2: Students will be able to articulate the values of their own individual organization as well as Greek Life as a whole at the University of La Verne
Rationale:
- Central to Greek Life is the understanding that students be able to communicate the core values of their own organization, as stated through their ritual, creeds and/or missions. Additionally, throughout the Greek Life recruitment and informational process, new members learn about the five core values of Greek Life: Social programs, scholarship, community service, leadership and brotherhood/sisterhood. These values are communicated on promotional pieces, within the Greek Life website and on all Greek-related marketing materials at the University of La Verne.
Measures:
- Students will complete a likert scale questionnaire which asks various questions related to their personal experiences as members within the ULV Greek community. Students will be asked the following question: As a result of my Greek Life experience, I know and understand not only the values of my own organization, but also the core values of Greek Life as a whole. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
- Secondarily, students will be asked to identify in an open ended question, the core values of Greek Life.
Objective 3: Students will participate in community service and philanthropy programs, and will understand what it means to be part of a larger community and the value of giving back to that community.
Rationale:
- Community service and philanthropy are core ideals of Greek life and each organization at the University of La Verne coordinates various community service programs each year which benefit local and national philanthropies. Even within Greek-wide events such as Greek Week and the Greek Leadership conference, community service is not only discussed but is included in such a way to promote students' experiences within volunteering and community service in the larger-ULV community.
Measure:
- Students will complete a likert scale questionnaire which asks a question related to their personal experiences as members within the ULV Greek community. Students will be asked the following question: As a result of my Greek Life experience, I understand what it means to be part of a larger community and the importance of giving back through community service and philanthropy involvement. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
- Secondarily, students will be asked to estimate their individual volunteer hours during the previous academic semester.
- Students will be asked to list the areas, agencies and organizations where they participated in community service programs during the previous academic semester.
Objective 4: Students will develop and enhance their individual leadership skills and abilities.
Rationale:
- Student Leadership and development are core ideals of Greek life and each organization at the University of La Verne provides opportunities for members to enhance their leadership skills through positions, committee membership and participation within local, regional and national workshops and trainings. In fall 2006, the Office of Student Life coordinated a Greek Leadership conference to assist students within Greek organizations with issues related to leadership and their own personal and professional development.
Measure:
- Students will complete a likert scale questionnaire which asks a question related to their personal experiences as members within the ULV Greek community. Students will be asked the following question: As a result of my Greek Life experience, I have had the opportunity to further develop my own individual leadership skills and abilities. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 5: Students will have greater institutional satisfaction at the University of La Verne.
Rationale:
- Student retention and engagement within the ULV community is central to the Office of Student Life's mission.
