Learning Outcome Planning Objectives
Orientation Program and ISO Program Learning Outcomes
Objective 1: Students will learn about opportunities and obligations that they have as student in the United States and at ULV.
Rationale:
- The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service places significant constraints on international students. The orientation is the place where they can learn both how to cope with the limitations and how to benefit from the opportunities their immigration status gives them including the various options for working and not working, travel home and to third countries, and changing requirements under SEVIS. .
Measures:
- The ISAC staff will coordinate a pre-test prior to the orientation program and provide a post-test at its conclusion.
- The ISAC staff will give a four-question survey after orientation that focuses on: 1) when students are allowed to work in the United States, 2) where they are allowed to work, 3) requirements for travel; and 4) the four requirements under SEVIS.
- The survey's will be scored and evaluated by staff after the Orientation and through subsequent follow-ups with program participants their results will be shared.
- Additionally, this information will help the ISAC staff enhance the Orientation program for future students. All survey results will be evaluated at the conclusion of the program and will used by the Director to improve the program for the future.
Objective 2: Students will learn about the many opportunities and services available to them as 'citizens' of ULV, ranging from academic to social contexts.
Rationale:
- The value of the university education is found both in the academic work and the co-curricular opportunities for students to explore. It is important that students know of these opportunities and the international complexities of student life in the United States, which might be quite different than their previous educational experiences. A central tenant of American higher education is that students are enriched by both their classroom and their out-of-classroom experiences and ISAC believes it is imperative that international students take full-advantage of these opportunities.
Measures:
- At the conclusion of the International Orientation program, students will be asked the following questions on a fill-in-the-blank questionnaire: 1.) Name three clubs at ULV that I can participate in, 2.) What are three reasons why I should consider joining the International Student Organization, and 3.) What three things can I find out about on the ISAC web site?
- The survey's will be scored and evaluated by staff after the Orientation and through subsequent follow-ups with program participants their results will be shared.
- Additionally, this information will help the ISAC staff enhance the Orientation program for future students. All survey results will be evaluated at the conclusion of the program and will used by the Director to improve the program for the future.
Objective 3: Undergraduate international students will be exposed to ISAC and ISO activities and invited to participate and students who take advantage of these activities will experience greater satisfaction with their education at ULV.
Rationale:
- Historically ULV international undergraduate students have been more involved with ISAC and ISO activities. Through program satisfaction surveys and other assessment data, we know that when they do, they show a greater degree of affinity with the University and its goals and mission. It is important that international undergraduate students identify with the ULV mission and feel connected to the institution, thereby enhancing their educational experience at the University of La Verne.
Measures:
- Students will be surveyed at the end of the year through a random sampling method and will be asked questions such as but not limited to: 1.) Throughout the past year, have you participated in ISO activities and/or programs, 2.) Throughout the past year, have you participated in University-wide events or programs?, 3.) If so, please list which programs you have attended.
- Additionally, students will be asked the following likert scale questions: 1.) As a result of my ISO experiences, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience, 2.) As a result of my participation in out-of-class ULV programs, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience, and 3.) As a result of my experiences working with the staff of the International and Study Abroad Center, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with these statements.
- Students will also be asked to expand on their satisfaction related to their ULV experiences in five key areas:
- ULV treats international students well.
- Americans at ULV show interest in my culture.
- I participated in ULV social activities.
- I have had contact with American students.
- I learned about immigration issues important to me.
-
This information will help the ISAC staff enhance programs for future students. All survey results will be evaluated at the conclusion of the year and will used by the Director to improve programs and services offered to undergraduate international students for the future.
Objective 4: Graduate students who participate in ISO and ISAC activities will have a stronger affiliation with ULV than graduate students who do not participate.
Rationale:
- Historically ULV international graduate students have not integrated in activities on campus, including and particularly reflected in ISO and ISAC activities. When they do participate, we have see through surveys and focus groups, that these students show more affiliation with ULV and are more satisfied with their educational experience.
Measures:
- Graduate students will be surveyed at the end of the year through a random sampling method and will be asked questions such as but not limited to: 1.) Throughout the past year, have you participated in ISO activities and/or programs, 2.) Throughout the past year, have you participated in University-wide events or programs?, 3.) If so, please list which programs you have attended.
- Additionally, graduate students will be asked the following likert scale questions: 1.) As a result of my ISO experiences, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience, 2.) As a result of my participation in out-of-class ULV programs, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience, and 3.) As a result of my experiences working with the staff of the International and Study Abroad Center, I am more satisfied with my ULV experience.

- I participated in ULV social activities.
- I have had contact with American students.
- I learned about immigration issues important to me.

This information will help the ISAC staff enhance programs for future graduate students. All survey results will be evaluated at the conclusion of the year and will used by the Director to improve programs and services offered to graduate international students for the future.
