Learning Outcome Planning Objectives
Short-Term and Long-Term Study Abroad Programs
Objective 1: Students who study abroad will return with a greater awareness of the world, of the role of international diversity in making an interesting and better world.
Rationale:
- "...I see the benefits of international education and exchanges every day. A member of my personal staff is a Fulbright alumnus, my British counterpart and I are shadowed for a day each year by students from our respective countries, in my daily activities I encounter world leaders--from Kofi Annan to Hamid Karzai--who participated in an exchange program or studied here or abroad." Former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Measures:
- The ISAC staff will coordinate a pre- and post-test for all students who study abroad. This test, developed by Dr. Aghop der Kerabetian, measures "world mindfulness and consciousness." Dr. der Kerabetian, the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences has studied and written on this concept and is considered an expert in this field of study. The pre-test will be given as part of the orientation class that all participants are required to do (within four months of the study abroad experience); the post test will be part of the debriefing session that all participants are required to do (within two months of their return to the U.S.).
Objective 2: Students who do short term study abroad programs will return with a greater awareness of the world, of the role of international diversity in making an interesting and better world. In particular, they will return with a greater consciousness of the world than those who study abroad for a short-term session.
Rationale:
- Even short-term study abroad programs should focus on helping ULV students to understand the world in a global context. Their participation in this program should directly translate into a meaningful understand of not only the culture they visited, but also their own cultural context.
