New Student and Parent Orientation
Learning Outcome Planning Objectives
A Program of the Office of Student Life
Objective 1: Students and parents will learn about resources, programs and services to aid in the transition from their previous educational experiences to the University of La Verne
Rationale:
- New Student and Parent Orientation, a program of the Office of Student Life, is the primary introductory student experience for all new students and parents at the University of La Verne. New Student and Parent Orientation takes place prior to a students' first semester at ULV and facilitates their transition from their past educational experiences. New Student and Parent Orientation includes diverse and varied programs including: academic advising, registration, social and academic integration programs, resource presentations and discussions and is adapted for new students, transfers, adult students and the diverse communities at the University of La Verne.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of each New Student and Parent Orientation program, all students and parent participants will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of New Student and Parent Orientation, I learned about the resources, programs and services which will aid my transition to ULV. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement provided in the questionnaire.
Objective 2: Students and parents, through a set program curriculum, will become more socially and academically integrated to the University of La Verne than they were prior to attending the program
Rationale:
- Social and academic integration are critical components of student retention as outlined in the work of Vincent Tinto (Dropout from Higher Education: A Theoretical Synthesis of Recent Research, 1975) and his subsequent update in 1998. New Student and Parent Orientation serving as the primary introductory student experience facilitates this successful transition.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of each New Student and Parent Orientation program, all students and parent participants will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of New Student and Parent Orientation, I made meaningful connections with current ULV student leaders and my new class peers helping me become more socially integrated to student life at ULV. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 3: Students and parents will learn about University of La Verne academic policies and procedures, guidelines, and deadlines; students will understand their academic requirements and responsibilities.
Rationale:
- A critical component of New Student and Parent Orientation is that students will successfully understand academic policies and procedures, guidelines, deadlines and academic requirements and expectations at the University of La Verne. This understanding is critical for the successful integration of students to our campus and helps them to navigate the University's various requirements.
Measure:
- At the conclusion of each New Student and Parent Orientation program, all students and parent participants will be surveyed with the following question: As a result of New Student and Parent Orientation, I better understand my academic requirements and am satisfied with my first semester academic schedule. Respondents will indicate through a likert scale (5 - strongly agree, 4 - agree, 3 - neutral, 2 - disagree and 1 - strongly disagree) their agreement with the statement.
Objective 4: Students will understand expectations of them as a student in our campus community as they relate to: citizenship, civility and academic integrity.
Measure:
- Measure will be developed in conjunction with New Student Orientation Coordinators in spring 2007.
Objective 5: Students will discover that the campus celebrates diversity through its support of many different organizations, resources, events and academic activities.
Measure:
- Measure will be developed in conjunction with New Student Orientation Coordinators in spring 2007.
Objective 6: The Orientation Week Leaders (OWLs) will learn about several leadership and counseling theories and be able to describe and directly apply them to their experiences as OWL's in the 2007 New Student and Parent Orientation program.
Measure:
- Measure will be developed in conjunction with New Student Orientation Coordinators in spring 2007.
