Procedures

SLCC, Judicial Board and Administrative Reviews are vehicles by which violations of institutional policy or community standards will be addressed.

Resident Students

For resident students, first violations of a policy will result in a written Behavioral Referral by the Resident Assistant (RA). A Behavioral Referral is a written account of the details regarding the violation of a policy or policies by the resident. The RA will inform the resident that a referral has been written and will submit the Behavioral Referral Form to the Area Coordinator.

The Area Coordinator will contact the resident to discuss the violation, hearing all sides of the issue. Generally, first time violations are handled by the Area Coordinator (an Administrative Review). However, with consultation from the Director of Housing and Residential Life, the Area Coordinator will determine if the incident needs to be referred to the SLCC or the Judicial Board. A sanction will be determined by the Area Coordinator and the resident, with the intent of personal growth as a result. The resident will be informed in writing that any further policy violations will result in referral.

Non-Resident Students

For non-resident students, violations of policies should be documented and submitted in writing to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Housing and Residential Life, or program administrator. Any University community member can report a policy violation. Once an incident is brought to the attention of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Housing and Residential Life, or program administrator, a student's case may be referred to either the SLCC, Judicial Board or Administrative Review depending on the violation of University policy.

Accepting Responsibility for Policy Violations

If the student who has been referred to the Director of Housing and Residential Life, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, Area Coordinator, or program administrator for a policy violation(s) accepts responsibility for violating the University policy(ies) the following options may occur:

  1. The student will have a review and sanctioning process with the appropriate administrator (administrative review); or
  2. The student will be referred to the Student Life Conduct Committee or Judicial Board for sanctioning procedures.

If the student who has been reported to the Director of Housing and Residential Life, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, Area Coordinator, or program administrator for a policy violation(s), does not accept responsibility for violating the University policy(ies) or challenges any part of the report, the following steps occurs:

  1. The appropriate judicial review body (SLCC, Judicial Board, or Administrative) will question the students and witnesses, if any, to determine if the student is found to be responsible for the policy violation.
  2. If the student is not found to be responsible for the policy violation(s), the case is closed.
  3. If the student is found to be responsible for the policy violation(s), the review body will then question the student to determine the appropriate sanction.

Any questions regarding this process should be directed to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
