First Year Experience Freshman Seminar
The purpose of First Year Experience is examined from two perspectives: the institutional perspective and the students' perspective.
Institutional Perspective:
- Develop support group for the new students
- Introduce the new students to the nature and value of higher learning
- Share the traditions, mission, and expectations of ULV
- Assist students in identifying the tools/processes that will facilitate their having a successful college experience, e.g., Career Planning, Time Management, Styles of Learning, and Campus Resources.
- Demonstrate the University's concern for the success of our students
Student Perspective:
- Become comfortable with the new environment by providing consistent, timely support for asking questions and expressing feeling and concerns
- Help each student to know what is expected
- Provide an opportunity for commuter students to meet other students in a supportive environment
- Discover who does what on campus in a timely, systematic fashion
- Feel individual support during a challenging period
- Find out how financial responsibilities can be met and managed
- Become aware of what it takes to do college level work
- Make friends and establish new social networks
First Year Experience is a one-unit course that all freshmen are required to take during their first semester at ULV. Also required to attend are transfer students with less than 30 transfer credits. The class has a course syllabus which outlines topics discussed in the class that will assist the new students with the transition into college. In addition to the course content, the small support group environment will be a place where students can discuss what is on their minds.
