FYE Course Themes and Descriptions


Core Curriculum:
The First Year Experience (FYE), a program of the Office of Student Life includes 27 class sections which center around the core challenges of transitioning to college. Topics discussed in ALL First Year Experiences classes include, but are not limited to:

Athletics Theme (2 sections):
This section focuses on the unique challenges of being a student-athlete at ULV and is created for students participating in one of ULV's recognized athletics programs. Utilizing the core curriculum, this section will create opportunities for student athletes to discuss strategies and techniques to help them not only be successful on the court or field, but also within the classroom, helping them to get the right start at ULV.

How to Succeed in Business and In Life Theme (3 sections):
This section is created for students who have an interest not only in possible careers in Business, but also are interested in developing skills and talents related to the business world. Taught by Business faculty, this section while utilizing the core curriculum, will tailor its discussions around specific programs and majors within the College of Business and help students discuss strategies, techniques and resources to help them be successful not only at ULV, but in life.

Career Exploration Theme (1 section):
This section will create unique experiences for students to explore career interests both at ULV and after graduation. While utilizing the core curriculum, this section will feature resources, modalities and typologies that help students better understand themselves, in an effort to choose the right major and career which fits their personal interests and abilities. This section is perfect for students who are undecided about their major and/or plans beyond college. This course is especially designed to help students further explore opportunities available at ULV and beyond.

Community Service Theme (1 section):
This section features opportunities for students to give back to the community through intentional service learning programs geared to put students in contact with agencies, projects and communities in the area looking for support and advocacy. While utilizing the core curriculum, this section will have off-site opportunities for service and is a great way for students interested in philanthropy or non-profit work to start off their ULV experience by immediately impacting our surrounding community.

Computers and Technology Theme (1 section):
This section is created for students who have a special interest in the latest-and-greatest technology. Utilizing the core curriculum, this section will help students explore their computer and technological interests at ULV while developing new skills for the future.

Education and Teaching Theme (1 section):
This section is created for students who have an interest in possible careers in Education and Teaching. Taught by Education faculty, this section while utilizing the core curriculum will tailor its discussions around specific programs and majors within the School of Education and Organizational Leadership and help students discuss strategies, techniques and resources to help them be successful at ULV.
