Steven Kent is a professional director, workshop leader, teacher, and activist committed to theatre as an instrument for community and personal transformation as well as progressive social change. He was founder and director of the Company and Provisional Theatres in Los Angeles and has directed productions at the New York Shakespeare Festival, The Manhattan Theater Club, the Mark Taper Forum, the Los Angeles Theater Center, Illusion Theatre, 7 Stages, the Guggenheim Museum, Highways Performance Space, and the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Kent and Deena Metzger have three times led workshops and rituals in Greece and Crete based on the Eleusinian Mysteries.

He has received three time LA Drama Critics Circle awards, and is a recipient of a major Theatre Communications Group Artists in Residency Grant. He is a member of the American Festival Project and Alternate ROOTS.

Currently, Kent is resident stage director of the Junebug Theater Project and works with A Traveling Jewish Theatre, Roadside Theater, Artists Confronting AIDS and the Urban Bushwomen.
