About the Playwright

Josefina Lopez was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Her family moved to East Los Angeles when she was 5. For almost 13 years they lived undocumented in Boyle Heights until the family obtained 'amnesty.' She attended Los Angeles County High School for the Arts where she majored in theatre. She was a member of the Young Playwrights Lab at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and she wrote her first play, the Emmy-winning Simply Maria, or the American Dream, at the age of 17. Having had over 40 professional productions of her plays shown throughout the United States, Josefina is one of today's preeminent Chicana writers.

In 1990 Real Women Have Curves premiered in San Francisco, and was soon optioned by HBO for a film version. It garnered awards from the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, and became an instant audience favorite when it opened in theatres across the country. This most produced Latina playwright in the country also works tirelessly to encourage others. Josefina teaches playwriting and screenwriting to local youth and Latino adults at Casa 0101, her theatre/art space in Boyle Heights. “I hope to give Latinas an opportunity to play characters that have dignity and courage, qualities that are representative of who we are.”

In 2004 Ms. Lopez added to her list of outstanding plays, Lola Goes to Roma, which debuted in Europe July 9th. At this precise moment, her latest play, Boyle Heights is having a successful run at Casa 0101. Don't miss it! She has an MFA in screenwriting from UCLA, and her scripts for Lola Goes to Roma and Loteria for Juarez have already been optioned. In recent years she has turned her hand to directing. With the short film, Baby Boom, completed, this renaissance woman, will soon debut as director of a full length feature.

We are filled with gratitude to the University of LaVerne's Coalition for Diversity for their help in bringing Ms. Lopez to our campus. It's a great honor to have a woman of such integrity, creativity and passion share her insights with us.
