Course Description:

A basic knowledge of and appreciation for chemistry is vital in today's high-tech., interrelated world. Understanding of chemical aspects of life helps us give meaning and purpose to the world around us. In Introductory Chemistry, the student is helped to understand the impact of his or her action on the environment.

Introductory Chemistry is a non-major course designed to satisfy the general education requirement for the physical sciences. This course is designed for students with little or no background in chemistry and physics and will introduce students to the basic principles of Chemistry which are informative and relative to everyday life. At the end of this course the student should have a fundamental understanding of chemical nomenclature, chemical problem solving, and chemical reactions. The problem solving skills obtained in this course will be useful long after you have finished this course.CHEM103 can be taken without lab for 3 semester hours or concurrently with CHEM103L (lab) for 4 semester hours. This course fulfills the following general education requirements for School of Continuing Education students at ULV: GEPS, GEPS-L (with lab).


Goals:

  • To introduce chemistry to the student at a basic and fundamental level.
  • To give the student the tools needed to solve chemical problems.
  • To illustrate the impact of chemistry on society.

Requirements:

For the lecture portion:

  • Read the "lecture" and corresponding chapters in the text.
  • Do homework problems assigned for each chapter.
  • 3 Learning Assessments
  • Final Learning Assessment

For the lab portion:

  • Read each lab and obtain the necessary materials.
  • Perform the experiments.
  • Write a lab summary and submit after each lab.
