Music 101, Fundamentals of Music (4 units)

ULV Catalog Course Description

Introduces music theory. Includes basic rhythms, clefs, notes, chord formation, musical materials and terms. No music background required.

Computer Requirements

This class utilizes software on a CD-ROM. The computer used must be 200MHz or faster, have at least: 64kB of RAM, a 16 bit sound card, and a 16X CD-ROM drive. It must be capable of running the latest versions of: Quicktime, Real Player, Shockwave, Flash Player, and Sibelius Scorch (free download instructions are included). Most computers made in the last few years should meet these requirements.

Course Goals and Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • an understanding of the nature of music (its creation and function).
  • enhanced their musical listening skills for live and recorded performances.
  • an understanding of the materials of music in the Western classical tradition.
  • the ability to write and understand musical symbols, including notation.
  • an understanding of the role music theory plays in a music department.

Requirements:

Weekly Assignments:

  1. Complete the assigned interactive exercises on your On Music Fundamentals CD-ROM.
  2. Take the assigned quizzes on your On Music Fundamentals CD-ROM.
  3. Post your Listening Reflections assignment on the Discussion Board.

One-Time Assignments:

  1. Post a Class Member Introduction to the Discussion Board. This brief self-introduction will help our class to begin building an online learning community.
  2. Write a Concert Report. Attend a live musical performance in your local area. There is no substitute for hearing live music. So much of the music we hear every day is recorded, so live listening opportunities are special occasions. Observe and critique the performance in a 2-3 page double spaced response, discussing your perceptions of and reactions to the concert.
  3. Post your parting remarks in the Farewell Forum on the Discussion Board.

Exams:

  1. A mid-term exam is due by the end of Week Five.
  2. A comprehensive final exam due by the end of Week Ten.

Incomplete Grade Policy
