ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND DIRECTIONS

Kern Instructions

As always, the campground at the Kern River does not take reservations. So whoever gets there first should try to save extra spaces.

Directions: From Bakersfield, head east on Hwy. 178. Turn left on Alfred Harrell Highway. You will see signs that indicate Camping and Lake Ming. Turn right on Lake Ming Rd. You will go around a big loop to the left by the lake. Turn right at the sign that says Camping.

Summer Instructions

I have contacted all the campgrounds, so they know we are coming. There are a few campgrounds where you will have to make your own reservations. When you make a reservation you should identify that you are with the La Verne Alumni Group. The contact phone or web sites are as follows:

Buffalo Campground: From Idaho Falls, go toward West Yellowstone on Highway 20. Buffalo Campground is on the right side of Highway 20, across the road from Ponds Lodge. There are a few loops that do not require a reservation, but they are on a first-come basis. You can reserve a camp site on the web at www.reserveusa.com or (877) 444-6777

Ruby Creek Campground: This is a BLM campground with an improved water system and newer pit toilets. From Buffalo Campground, turn right on Highway 20 headed to West Yellowstone. You will be looking for Highway 87, where you will turn left toward Ennis. After you go over Raynolds Pass and down the hill, you will run into Highway 287. Again you will turn left toward Ennis. Continue on Highway 287, and at mile marker 30 you will turn left at the West Madison Recreation Area. You will cross the river then turn left (south). Continue for about 3 miles to the campground. Spaces at this campground are on a first-come basis.

Virginia City Campground: From Ruby Creek, go back out to Highway 287, turn left toward Ennis. Go straight through Ennis and follow the signs to Virginia City. The Campground is before town on the left side near the bottom of the hill (so watch your speed). You can make reservations by phone at (406) 843-5493 or (888) 833-5493. If nothing is available or if you would like to stay at Alder KOA, the phone number is (406) 842-5677

Lewis & Clark Caverns Campground: From Virginia City Campground, turn left through town. Continue through Twin Bridges and on to Whitehall. At Whitehall, continue east on the frontage road to Cardwell. At Cardwell, take State Route 2 to the Caverns or follow the signs. I have reserved and paid for the Group Camp site.

Loch Leven: This is a BLM campground. Turn left as you exit the Caverns and head toward Three Forks. At Three Forks, get on Interstate 90 headed toward Bozeman. Continue through Bozeman to Livingston and exit at Exit 333. Go South toward Yellowstone Park for about 3 miles, then turn left on the East River Road. About 3 1/2 miles past the Pine Creek Store & Cafe you will see a sign for Loch Leven. Turn right and follow the signs to the campground. Spaces at this campground are on a first-come basis. I have a group-use permit for this campground.

Paradise KOA: This is on the Yellowstone River. Go back toward the Pine Creek Store about 3 1/2 miles, turn left before the Store & Cafe, then follow the signs to the KOA. You can make reservations by calling (406) 222-0992.
