Thanks to a final flurry of contributions in the closing days of 2007, the university exceeded its $26.1 million goal for the Campus Center Project, allowing it to qualify for a $600,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation.
The Campus Center Project is a key component of the university’s five-year, $42 million Building on Excellence Campaign. Achieving the Campus Center Project fund-raising effort and qualifying for the $600,000 grant moves ULV within $2.5 million of its overall goal with six months remaining in the comprehensive campaign.
The formal announcement came on December 30, 2007, meeting the conditions of the Kresge Challenge Grant. The intent of the grant is to help the university leverage support from new donors and secure higher levels of giving from past contributors.
“This is a very proud time for everyone at the University of La Verne. The Campus Center Project is a landmark effort that will impact the future of this university and enhance the college experience we provide our students,” said President Steve Morgan. “Such a success speaks volumes about both the people who sought to meet this challenge and those individuals and foundations that made it possible.”
The three-part Campus Center Project encompasses renovations to the Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion (formerly known as the Super Tents), creation of the Frank and Nadine Johnson Family Plaza and construction of the Sara & Michael Abraham Campus Center Building. Studies show that campus environment and a campus center are two significant reasons students select a university, issues that are both addressed by the Campus Center Project.
“Meeting this goal says a great deal about this institution, its educational mission and all those who support it,” said Board of Trustees Chair Ben Harris. “I and the rest of the board applaud everyone who came together and made this happen. And I personally want to thank all the dedicated members of the board who stepped forward with their donations and leadership to help us accomplish this challenge.”
When The Kresge Foundation awarded the grant to ULV in December 2006, the university was nearly $4.4 million shy of its $26.1 million goal. The time conditions put forth by the challenge grant intensified fund-raising endeavors, which in turn led to a remarkable response of support.
“Being involved with this effort to meet the Kresge Challenge Grant has been both exhausting and exhilarating. This will be remembered as a momentous achievement made possible by many, many talented and committed individuals,” said Jean Bjerke, ULV vice president of University Relations. “The leadership and loyalty of our donors are the foundation from which all of the university’s advancement efforts are built. And the impact of such support will shape the futures of La Verne students for generations to come.”
